Russell Morris played briefly with North Shore before being coaxed back to Hawthorn, where he had played previously as a junior prior to moving to Sydney. He was a highly capable utility who in his debut season of 1984 with the Hawks was widely feted as the recruit of the year but nevertheless was not picked in that season’s losing grand final team against Essendon. He did, however, appear in the grand finals of 1985-6-7, although only the 1986 game, against Carlton, was won.

Morris enjoyed an exceptional 1987 season which brought selection for Victoria and inclusion in that year’s All Australian team.

In 1991 after 93 V/AFL games and 52 goals for the Hawks he crossed to St Kilda where he spent four seasons, adding 66 games and 32 goals to his respective career tallies.
