After a somewhat stuttering start to his AFL career which saw him play 13 games with Fitzroy in 1996 followed by five with Brisbane in 1997-8 Shane Clayton came good in no uncertain terms after joining his third club, Kangaroos. A fairly lightly framed (186cm, 87kg) wingman and utility he nailed down a more or less permanent spot in the Roos side from the outset and was a key player in their 1999 premiership win. From 1999 to 2004 he played 99 games for the Kangas and scored 51 goals.
