Stewart Geddes was already an experienced league footballer when he commenced with West Torrens, as the club's captain, in 1908. Equally effective as a follower or a key position defender, he had been a member in 1897 of Melbourne's inaugural VFL teams, and then gone on to play a total of 81 games for the club over half a dozen seasons, with the highlight coming in 1900 when he helped the side to a premiership. He later played 10 VFL games for St Kilda.
At West Torrens Geddes proved a highly respected leader besides earning a reputation as a forceful, canny and immensely reliable player. Between 1908 and 1912 and in 1914 and 1915 he played 70 SAFL games, kicking 24 goals, plus two matches for South Australia. In addition to skippering Torrens in his debut season with the club he did so in 1909, and was playing coach in 1914 and 1915.
