A key position player who could either operate as a forward or in defence, Stuart Wigney joined Footscray from Leongatha and produced plenty of good football over four seasons (1988 to 1991) during which he played 47 games and kicked 21 goals. It would prove to be the most productive phase of his four club AFL career, with his form in 1990 being particularly impressive as he racked up 284 disposals and 132 marks. He also represented a Victorian B side against Tasmania.

After the 1991 season Wigney was traded to Sydney but a serious ankle injury and a broken leg restricted him to just a single appearance in 1992, following which he was traded to Adelaide. He produced some telling football with the Crows, but overall lacked consistency, and after 10 games and 20 goals in two seasons he was de-listed. When fit, but not selected by Adelaide, Wigney played in the SANFL for Sturt.

In 1995-6 Wigney played 14 games and scored one goal for Richmond, operating mainly at centre half back, a position to which his strength and running ability made him well suited. Once again, however, he lacked consistency, leading to his final de-listing in 1996.
