Tony Evans commenced with Claremont in 1989 and was quick to make an impression. Despite seeming a little on the slow side he was a quick thinker who knew how to amass high disposal stats and use the ball effectively. Drafted by West Coast, he soon developed into a key cog in the Eagles machine, and went on to play 108 AFL games and kick 78 games between 1991 and 1998. When the club claimed its inaugural premiership in 1992 Tony Evans was a significant contributor to the grand final defeat of Geelong, collecting 20 possessions and kicking 3 goals as the Eagles eased home by 28 points. He later played in the club's 1994 flag-winning side as well and continued to be a regular senior player until 1997, when he sustained a back injury, after which he found it hard to re-establish himself.

Tony Evans' WAFL career with Claremont partly overlapped his AFL stint with the Eagles. His 74 games for the Tigers from 1989 to 1998 included the winning grand finals of 1989 and 1991.
