Roy Ramsay was a solid, unspectacular specialist back pocket player who had two stints with North Melbourne separated by a single season sojourn at Essendon. In his first spell with the Kangas which ran from 1976 to 1981 he was never a first choice senior player, although he invariably did a serviceable job when picked. North played in three grand finals during this period but Ramsay was not selected to play in any of them.

The 1982 season saw Ramsay at Essendon where he struggled to make an impression, managing just 3 senior games. Indeed, the highlight of his time at the club was his victory in the reserves best and fairest award.

It was only really in his second stint at North Melbourne from 1983 to 1986 that Roy Ramsay really managed to display his true potential. For the first three of those seasons he was a near automatic inclusion in the senior team and ended up playing a total of 70 VFL games for thr club in which he kicked 11 goals. A persistent shoulder injury saw him fail to add to his games tally in 1987, which proved to be his last season in the VFL. He rounded off his career by playing for Port Melbourne in the VFA.
