Son of former St Kilda Brownlow Medallist Neil Roberts, Michael Roberts was a clever, resourceful rover who carved out an impressive ten season VFL career with three clubs. From Beaumaris, he was recruited by St Kilda and went on to play 77 VFL games and score 45 goals for the club from 1978 to 1985. At his best he was acknowledged as one of the finest small men in the game, a status affirmed by his selection to represent Victoria in 1981.

In 1986 and 1987 Roberts had brief stints at Richmond (12 games, four goals) and Fitzroy (two games, one goal) respectively before embarking on a noteworthy career as a football commentator on television.
