After struggling to make his mark at Melbourne, where he played just a dozen games and booted the same number of goals in 1990-1 Brent Heaver was picked up by Carlton in the 1991 national draft.

Capable of playing either in the midfield or a forward pocket, where his keen goal sense came to the fore, Heaver enjoyed the most productive phase of his career with the Blues, playing 64 AFL games and kicking 106 goals between 1992 and 1996. A dip in form and effectiveness saw him restricted to just five appearances in 1995, which was a Carlton premiership year, but he seemed to be back on track the following year when he was a near ever-present. It was therefore something of a surprise when he was traded to a Port Adelaide team which was making its debut in the AFL in 1997. With his best clearly behind him, however, he failed to establish a regular place in the team and retired at the end of the 1998 season having added 16 games and 13 goals to his respective career tallies.
