Shortly before breaking into Brisbane’s senior line-up Simon Luhrs experienced the thrill of helping Queensland achieve a historic state of origin victory Victoria. That was in 1991, and over the course of that season and the next Luhrs went on to play a dozen games for the Bears, without kicking a goal. Most commonly used in a key defensive role, he could also do a serviceable job in the ruck. Strong overhead, he was the consummate team player, and never shirked the more mundane or unglamorous aspects of the game. In 1991 he played at full back in the Bears’ reserve grade premiership-winning team.

After being de-listed by Brisbane Luhrs joined Central District where he proved a decided asset in a team which was soon to mount a realistic bid for its first ever senior premiership. That the bid failed was certainly no fault of Simon Luhrs who was transformed by the Bulldogs into arguably the SANFL’s finest centre half forward. His 92 games for Centrals between 1993 and 1999 included the losing grand finals of 1995 and 1996, both against Port Adelaide. Always a genuine goal threat, he booted 88 goals.
