After failing to break through for a senior game at Melbourne Cristian O’Brien joined Norwood in 1993 where a series of strong performances saw him picked up by Geelong in the Mid-Season Draft. Opting to see out the year with the Redlegs, he was on a half forward flank in their losing grand final clash with Woodville-West Torrens.
Athletic, strong and a fine kick, he was at home in almost any position. He spent the period from 1994 to 1996 with Geelong but only managed a couple of senior appearances. He rounded off his career back at the Parade and had played 52 games and scored 91 goals by the time he retired in 1999. He was the Redlegs’ top goal kicker in 1998 with 31 goals.
