Born in Perth, Brian Falconer was an excellent junior footballer who progressed to league ranks with West Perth in 1952. His four season stint with the Cardinals saw him play 62 WANFL games whilst establishing himself as one of the premier wingmen in the state, and inevitably attracting attention from VFL clubs. The 1956 season found him at Hawthorn, a destination that may have been suggested to him by West Perth’s coach Peter O’Donohue, himself a former Hawks player and captain.
Falconer impressed in the VFL, proving himself on a par in terms of ability with virtually any other wingman you care to name. However, owing to the demands of his career as a public servant he felt compelled to retire in 1960, aged just 27. He had played 57 VFL games and scored seven goals. He later made a brief comeback of sorts with Waverley in the VFA (24 games, 58 goals, 1961-2) but he was always essentially a Hawthorn man.
