John Perry was recruited by Richmond from Wodonga and he debuted for the Tigers in 1964. A skilful half forward and wingman, he would certainly have played many more than his final tally of 26 games in six seasons had he not so frequently fallen victim to injury and illness, as well as being required to undertake National Service. Nevertheless, he still managed to taste premiership glory, albeit only as 20th man, as the Tigers overcame Geelong in the 1967 grand final. He had earlier been a member of Richmond’s 1966 reserve grade premiership-winning side.

The 1970 season saw Perry crossing to North Melbourne where he quickly established himself as an important player, making 57 appearances and kicking 28 goals in four and a bit years. He rounded off his career with brief stints at VFA clubs Caulfield (14 games, eight goals in 1974) and Williamstown (15 games, five goals, 1975).
