A product of Assumption College, Kilmore, flame-haired Darryl Herrod was recruited by Geelong, but struggled to make his mark. In 1966-7 he played just seven times for the Cats seniors whilst putting in more than 75 appearances for the reserves. In 1966 he won the Gardiner Medal for best and fairest in the VFL reserves competition, an achievement which has proved to be a noose around the neck of many a promising footballer.

Herrod’s fortunes improved markedly after he transferred to Fitzroy. Playing for the most part in the backlines, he was solid and reliable as well as consistent. Unlike at Geelong, he was a regular senior player, making 47 appearances and kicking one goal from 1968 to 1971.

After leaving the Lions he spent the 1972 and 1973 seasons playing for TANFL side North Hobart before joining Port Melbourne, for whom he played 43 VFA games from 1972 to 1974.
