HB: Bachar Houli (Richmond), Jeremy McGovern (West Coast), Shannon Hurn, vice-captain (West Coast)

The team features four players from Geelong and West Coast, three from Brisbane, two from Collingwood, Fremantle, Richmond and the Western Bulldogs, and one each from Carlton, GWS and Melbourne. Eight sides — Adelaide, Essendon, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Sydney — are not represented.
The original 40-man squad, from which the side was selected, also included Daniel Talia (Adelaide), Hugh McCluggage, Dayne Zorko (Brisbane), Adam Treloar (Collingwood), Gary Ablett, Mark Blicavs, Nick Haynes (GWS), James Sicily (Hawthorn), Ben Brown, Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne), Travis Boak (Port Adelaide), Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia (Richmond), Dane Rampe (Sydney), Andrew Gaff, Brad Sheppard, Luke Shuey (West Coast), Josh Dunkley (Western Bulldogs).
2019 Brownlow Medal
Nat Fyfe's reputation as one of the great modern AFL players was enhanced further when he claimed his second Brownlow Medal on September 23. Fyfe polled 33 votes to finish six clear of Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield. Dangerfield himself had been widely tipped to become a dual Medal winner, and Fyfe's win was somewhat of an upset, given that Fyfe's team Fremantle won only nine games in 2019.
Fyfe polled in 12 of the 20 games he played, and he held an unassailable lead by the time votes up to and including Round 21 had been counted. He is the 15th player to have won multiple Brownlow Medals and, at age 28 with several playing years ahead of him, will have a reasonable chance of joining the elite group of triple medallists, which currently comprises Haydn Bunton, Dick Reynolds, Bob Skilton and Ian Stewart.

AFL Rising Star award
The 2019 AFL Rising Star award has been won by first-year wunderkind Sam Walsh of Carlton. Walsh was a near unanimous choice of the eleven-man judging panel, getting the full five votes from all except Luke Darcy, who placed Walsh second behind Port Adelaide's Connor Rozee. Walsh's overall vote count was 54, eight clear of Rosee's 42. Richmond's Sydney Stack (28 votes) and Bulldog Bailey Smith (21) rounded out the top four.
Walsh is the first Carlton player to win the award, and his victory leaves only GWS and the Western Bulldogs as current AFL teams without a Rising Star winner.

AFL Coaches Association Champion Player — Bulldog Bontempelli wins
×
Right ▼
Marcus Bontempelli has become the first Bulldogs player to win the AFL Coaches Association's Champion Player award, finishing 17 votes clear of 2016 winner, Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield. Bontempelli, who finished runner-up to Lewis Taylor in the 2014 AFL Rising Star award, had his best season yet, following on from a 2018 season in which he was hampered by ongoing hip soreness.
The award was inagurated in 2003, with Collingwood's Nathan Buckley the first recipient. As well as Bontempelli, two other Western Bulldogs midfielders finished in the top 10, Jack Macrae and Josh Dunkley both enjoying fine seasons.
