East Perth applies to join the VFL
MELBOURNE: The East Perth Football Club of Western Australia has applied to join the Victorian Football League (VFL).
The director of East Perth, Jim Somerville, and the club general manager, Ron Webster, made their application on Wednesday at VFL House. The VFL president, Allen Aylett, vice-president Graham Huggins and general manager Jack Hamilton discussed the approach.
Hamilton said later that East Perth believed it would be "the best thing for Western Australia football". It would assist the game and end the talent [drain] origin of players from Western Australia.
East Perth believed there should be two Western Australian clubs in the VFL competition. If it joined alone it would be the 13th club. With two Western Australian clubs one could play in Perth while the other played in Melbourne. But the VFL administrators told the East Perth, officials,"the enormous difficulties remained to be overcome. Mr Hamilton said it had been agreed that the matter be circulated to the 12 VFL clubs before being discussed at the next directors' meeting on October 29.
