Gigsy's Ladder Comp: "It's true! Mother really does know best!"
G'day Ladder people.
Well, how things can change in a few weeks. When the Western Bulldogs limply rolled over and succumbed to Fremantle in round 23, nobody could have predicted that they were about to embark on the month of a lifetime and lift themselves from seventh on the ladder to a premiership.
From seventh on the ladder to first in a four-week frenzy. And because this comp is all about ladders, our ladder ladder was directly affected by the AFL ladder. So let's see how the last five weeks panned out.
ROUND 22: Our last update saw Chris T on 46, four points clear of my Mum on 50, with Oliver G third on 54 and two Roberts - G and N - on 56.
ROUND 23: Chris T remained four clear at the top of the ladder on 46, with Oliver G joining his grandmother in equal second place on 50, with the two Roberts on 52 and Running Hoops, Cookie and Mike F on 54.
FINALS WEEK 1: The Doggies' upset win over West Coast saw movement at the top, with Chris T being joined by Gigsy's Mum, both on 52, with Oliver G, Robert G and Cookie snapping at their heels on 54.
FINALS WEEK 2: They did it again, those Doggies, another upset win - this time over Hawthorn - lifting them into the top four, which in turn lifted long-time Doggies' lover (but one-time Hawks' fan) Gigsy's Mum to outright first place on 52, ahead of an awesome foursome - Chris T, Robert G, Al W (who had led the comp for much of the first half of the season) and Running Hoops, all just behind on 54.
FINALS WEEK 3: An almost irrepressible force by this stage, the Dogs dashed the Giants' hopes of making a Grand Final for the first time, while Sydney dashed the hopes of all those hoping to see a Grand Final that pitted Cats against Dogs. Gigsy's Mum remained two points clear on 48, with the previous week's foursome splitting up into Al W in second place on 50, Chris T on 52, Robert G on 54 and Running Hoops on 56.
GRAND FINAL: Incredibly the Dogs did it - they vanquished the Swans to complete a four-week transition from seventh to sixth to fourth to second to first on the ladder. The swapping of Sydney and Footscray affected the final scores and - just slightly - also affected the top five positions on the ladder ladder. So, we can now proudly announce that the 2016 winner of Gigsy's Ladder Comp is... Gigsy's Mum! With a score of 46, Mum finished six clear of former winner Al W and Chris T, equal second on 52, with Robert G fourth on 54 and Running Hoops (another former winner) on 56.
At this point it's worth reminding our ladder friends just how Mum's serendipitous ladder came to be. It all stemmed from a little bit of personal story. She had Footscray at the top of the ladder based on that being her team since she moved into a house in St Albans with Dad in 1954 (yep, the year of the Doggies' only other flag). Prior to that she'd lived in and barracked for Hawthorn (second on her ladder), after she had moved to Melbourne from Adelaide (third), where once, working in a bar in the early 1950s, she met Peter Pianto and a bunch of very nice men who all happened to play for Geelong (fourth). Of course none of this footy stuff meant much to her at the time because she was born and grew up in Sydney (fifth).
So Mum's history-making ladder is based on her own personal history!
While congratulations are in order for the winners and place-getters, special mentions should also be made of Spencer G who, despite finishing outside the placings in 16th spot, correctly picked that the Dogs would play the Swans in the Grand Final and the following entrants who, along with Gigsy's Mum also picked the Bulldogs to win the flag: Damien L, Harro, Smokie Dawson, T Bone, Gigsy's Dogs, John Harms.
Well done, too, to Rowdy, The Thoroughbred, The Saint, Doin' the Conga and 4Boat, who all though the Dogs would make it to the Grand Final, and Baabaa Sheepball, Al W and Ethel Maudie, who correctly forecast that the Swans would get there.
Information regarding prize money distribution will be emailed to all entrants this week.
Thanks to all who took part this year. We'll be back bigger and better than ever next year to see if Mum and the Bulldogs can defend their titles!
Until 2017, happy ladder thoughts to you all!
