Gigsy's Ladder Comp: Round 2 - Mum's the word!
We're back for the 26th year of the Ladder competition! Welcome back to all returning ladderists and a big welcome to all of our new ones. May your ladders do really well, but not quite as well as mine!
It's been a great start to the 2016 AFL season, with scores up compared to last year and the game seemingly a little bit more free-flowing than in recent times. If you're a Western Bulldogs fan (and we need as many as we can get), you'd be tempted to call for a halt to the season right now, with the Doggies sitting pretty on top of the ladder.
Gigsy's Mum (yes, my very own mother) might well be wishing for the same thing. As it stands Mum's ladder is on top of the 'ladder ladder', her score of 60 enough to give her a slight break over Al W's 62 (remembering that the lowest score is the aim in this comp), who is two clear of The Thoroughbred's 64, whose unmatched knowledge of the GGs might well be matched by his footy expertise, based on his current 'ladder ladder' position.
Mum's (at least currently) serendipitous ladder stems from a little bit of personal history. She has Footscray at the top of the ladder based on that being her team since she moved into a house in St Albans with Dad in 1954 (yep, the year of the Doggies' only flag). Prior to that she'd lived in and barracked for Hawthorn (second on her ladder), after she had moved to Melbourne from Adelaide (third), where once, working in a bar in the early 1950s, she met Peter Pianto and a bunch of very nice men who all happened to play for Geelong (fourth). Of course none of this footy stuff meant much to her at the time because she was born and grew up in Sydney (fifth).
So that's how Mum's top five teams came about, with the rest of the places based on last year's ladder. So far, so good!
Meanwhile, Al W is a previous place-getter in this comp and a fellow member of the W family, Matt W is a previous champion. Those Ws are clearly A-grade when it comes to footy knowledge.
Newcomers to ladder comp might notice in the 'ladder ladder' below that some entrants are marked with an '(S)'. Traditionally that mark has denoted the ladders of "so-called experts" such as The Age's Rohan Connolly and SEN's Andy Maher. This year I've added a little twist by including seven "social media" ladders. These seven ladders showed up my my Twitter timeline prior to the season and have been included for a little fun. None of the ladders marked '(S)' are paying entries and therefore are not valid to win a prize, although the seven social media entrants will have the opportunity to become paying entrants if they choose to do so prior to the commencement of round 4.
One of those, @theaflbluster, is currently sitting in fourth place, two behind The Thoroughbred. In equal fifth-place are Rob N, Pauline L, aka The Cattery, along with Dead LR, another newcomer who is more well known as the crossword compiler LR in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald. I'm not sure what cryptic methodology LR used to come up with his ladder, but it seems to have worked well at this early stage of the season.
Last year's winner Footy Maths Institute, is back in the field after two rounds, in 49th place, while last year's wooden-spooner Theo Harms has started with a bang and he's up in eighth place. At the other end of the ladder on a lamentable 124 points is former cosmonaut Yrag Legov, whose knowledge of footy does not appear to match his astronautical capabilities. The lowest-placed paying entrant, Stefan G can draw comfort from the knowledge that he will get his $10 back at the end of the year if things do not change.
As it stands we have 108 entrants who are committed to paying, which means the winner is in line for $481.50 (although it might be $480 if it's Mum, because I'll be charging her a $1.50 delivery fee), with second to receive $267.50, third $160.50, fourth $107.00 and fifth $53.50.
Stand by for weekly updates (each Wednesday as of next week) so you can keep an eye on how your ladder is going.
All entrants will also receive a weekly email with a full spreadsheet of everyone's ladder so you can compare yours with your fellow ladderists. This week's will hit your inbox in the next 24 hours.
Until round three, happy laddering!
