The death of Bert Renfrey
The captain of the 1911 South Australian football team has been found dead in a park with a gunshot wound in the abdomen. The body of Ethelbert Luxmore Renfrey, about 60, bookmaker, of Gurney road, Dulwich, was found in the South Parklands today. A shotgun was found nearby. Renfrey's motor car was parked in Beaumont road, a short distance away. Constable Horne, of Dulwich, is making inquiries.
In his day, Renfrey was a champion league footballer and runner. He came to Adelaide from Western Australia and for several seasons was captain of Sturt. He also led South Australia in many interstate games and captained the team which won the Australian football carnival championship in 1911.
No inquest
Following a report by Constable Horne, the City Coroner (Mr. Blackburn) has decided not to hold an inquest into the death… Renfrey, who was a former interstate football captain, had been in ill health for some time.
