The death of Geoff Moriarty

Manly in his physique and character and staunch in his Catholicity—he was a daily Communicant—Mr Geoffrey Moriarty, 77, of 72 Hodgkinson street, Clifton Hill, died on October 29.
He was footballer, boxer, swimmer and cyclist. He played football with Fitzroy for fifteen years and was vice-captain in 1901 and 1903. In 1911-1912 he was secretary of the club. On his retirement as player he was presented with the club's gold medal, inscribed, and a purse of 50 sovereigns. He played one year with Carlton.
Author of a booklet, "The Art of "The of Self Defence", he was a boxing trainer for some years, among those who some among those who passed through his hands being Pat Dolan, Val Quirk and Roy Ralph. Jack Johnson and Tommy Burns, who fought for the world's heavyweight title in Sydney, had trained in his rooms in Little Collins-street.
He was one of the early writers of the "Holy Name Monthly".
The late Mr Moriarty was born at Benalla and was married at St. Patrick's Cathedral to Miss Mary Jackson. He is survived by his widow and the following family: Irene (Mrs. Morris), Jack (champion goalkicker with Fitzroy about 25 years ago), Lucy (Mrs. Shillinglaw) and Marie (Mrs. Reed).
After Requiem Mass at St. John's, Clifton Hill, celebrated by Fr. G. Maher, the funeral took place to Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, and was conducted by Alfred Allison (Daniel Hayes).
