The death of Max Smith
CRICKET FIELD FATALITY - MAX SMITH FATALLY INJURED
Playing for Werribee South against I.OR. at Chirnside Park on Saturday last, Max. Smith, one of Werribee South's leading batsman was fatally injured by a ball which shot off the bat. He was struck on the temple by a ball bowled by his younger brother Clive, who plays for I.O.R. Although staggered by the blow Smith walked off the arena, but when talking to one of his team mates, suggesting that he resume batting, he suddenly collapsed.
He was immediately taken to "Wandene" private hospital and admitted in a serious condition with a probable fracture of the skull and cerebral contusion. On Sunday a specialist from Melbourne was called into consultation, but he passed away at 3 o'clock on Monday morning. The deceased who was 25 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Smith, of Werribee South, and was a popular district footballer and cricketer.
Last year he played football for Essendon and this year, playing for Werribee South. He was awarded the prize for best and fairest player in the grand final of the Werribee District Association. The remains were interred in the Werribee cemetery on Tuesday afternoon when a large number of district and metropolitan friends cf the family paid their respects.
The prayers at the graveside were read by Rev. J. E. Smith, while the funeral arrangements were carried cut by Messrs. Nelson Bros., of Williamstown.
