Game Helps Red Cross Funds
Two teams of women footballers from the Midland Junction Workshops, who titled themselves Swan Districts and East Fremantle, thoroughly entertained a large crowd of supporters and friends of the Maylands branch of the Red Cross Society at the Bassendean Oval yesterday when they met in their third game of "league" football in aid of patriotic purposes. Swan Districts led by Miss P. Grundy won from East Fremantle, led by Miss J. McQuire, by 5.8 to 4.6.
Heavy rain just prior to the game made the grass slippery and the turf cricket pitch in the centre of the oval played its part in producing humorous incidents but these factors did not detract from the enthusiasm in which the young women joined in the game. Further evidence of the enthusiasm of these players towards a national cause was seen after the match when many of them left to prepare themselves for a night shift at the works.
Arising out of the match 18 players will be selected to meet a women's team from the WA munitions factory. These two teams will play a match at Perth Oval on Sunday, September 10, in aid of the Crippled Children's Seaside Home appeal. Yesterday's game will raise over £25 for the Red Cross and bring the total of the teams' efforts to over £175, the previous £70 and £80 going to aid the POW appeal.
THE TEAMS WERE:
