Micro Noises 37 - Brodie's back!
A birthday picket fence
In Micro Noises 36 we made mention of Magpie Brodie Grundy being the latest AFL player to possess a footy score birthdate (15.4.94). It turns out that big Brodie is numerically special in another way too. When he made his debut in round 18, he became the 1,111th player to pull on a Collingwood jumper.
And while we at Micro Noises have no idea what goes on in the Magpie change rooms after a game, we can also tell you that BRODIE GRUNDY is an anagram of NUDE BIRD ORGY.
The 119 v 84 specialists
Hawthorn and Collingwood cemented their reputation as the 119 versus 84 specialists last Friday night at the MCG. The final score 119 v 84 has only been seen in the AFL twice in the last 16 years and only the Hawks and the Magpies have been involved. Before last Friday's win, the score was last registered when Collingwood 18.11 (119) defeated Hawthorn's 12.12 (84) at Docklands in 2006.
Meanwhile St Kilda could lay claim to being the 118 v 59 specialists. The last three VFL/AFL matches to feature that final score have all involved the Saints. They lost to Sydney with that score last Sunday, defeated Footscray 118-59 at Moorabbin in 1971, and lost to Melbourne at the Junction Oval in 1955 in a match that also finished 118-59.
First amongst unequals
You would think that a final score of 96 v 106 might have come up a few times in more than 14,000 VFL/AFL matches but, until last Saturday, it hadn't. Carlton's win over Richmond was the first ever occurrence of that combination.
West Coast's 41-107 loss to Geelong and Melbourne's 38-133 thrashing at the hands of Fremantle were also the first-ever appearances of those final scores in VFL/AFL history.
Score wars
Adelaide's loss to Port Adelaide in round 19 saw the score of 103 come up for the 10th time in 2013. It is the most common score to have been seen this season, with 77, which has come up nine times, the second-most recorded. Round 20 saw 56 and 129 coming up for the first time this year, leaving 64 and 126 as the only final scores between 50 and 130 not seen in 2013.
The Marginal Medal
Meanwhile Richmond's round 19 win over Hawthorn was the seventh 41-point result in 2013, making 41 the equal most common margin of the year, along with 9 and 28. The next most common margins are 4, 5, 10, 17 and 35, each of which has come up five times.
Postcode of the week
Gold Coast put up a good show against Port Adelaide but eventually fell 17 points short of the Power. Though the Suns were in the game for much of the time, they never quite felt at home. They certainly tried to, though. They scored 5, 3, 2 and 2 behinds in each of their four quarters and 5322 is the postcode of both GOLDen Heights and SUNlands.
Year of the week
The bad news just keeps spreading for Essendon, almost at plague rates. So maybe it's not so surprising that the Bombers were 1.3 at quarter time of their match against North Melbourne, and 4.8 at half time. 1348 was the year the bubonic plague spread to central and western Europe.
Ridiculous footy anagram of the week
Still on the unpleasant events surrounding Essendon and the AFL, it seems as though measured dialogue has turned into radical all-out war between two of the protagonists, ANDREW DEMETRIOU AND JAMES HIRD. No wonder they are an anagram of MEASURED? RAD! DREW MEN INTO JIHAD!
Micro Noises is Andrew Gigacz's regular, quirky look at all things footy. The name Micro Noises is an anagram of Enrico Misso, who played one game for St Kilda in 1985. He remains the only Enrico and the only Misso to have played footy at the highest level.
