The death of Alan Belcher
Admirers of Alan Belcher will deeply regret the passing of that great footballer, who died last Saturday.
I knew the former Essendon captain was seriously ill, but, in common with others, was shocked at his unexpected death. It is sad to reflect that he has been taken so early—in the very ripeness of early manhood's prime, for he was one of the toughest men who ever pulled on a guernsey.
I knew him well. For many years I admired the strong manliness that was as marked a characteristic of his private life as of his prowess in the ruck. On the field he was game and willing, almost too fierceness, but rarely aggressor. Off the field he was sunny-natured and sincere, a man I was always delighted to meet. At his best, he had no superior in the ruck. Full of strength and glorious dash, he followed with wonderful stamina, and was a superb high mark. It is strange that such a man should go so soon. He was 36 years old.
