Nice goal, Bomba!! remember the moment well: tremendous effort by Harmes, involved in all play leading to the swipe to Sheldon. Under current criteria (at least until Saturday night), this would have been deemed inconclusive, as the vision was so poor. Interesting to note the Goal Umpire was in great position to overrule, but chose not to intervene. However, after Saturday's outcome, the video reviewer would have GUESSED it was out, and overruled the goal. Note the score at the time: the goal took Carlton ten points clear, the Blues won by five points (this was the famous George Harris speech: "What's better than beating Collingwood by ten goals? Beating them by five points!!" This was the only goal Carlton scored for the quarter (1.4), to Collingwood's 4.2. Great match. My story from The Age (October 1, 1979) is at http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19791001&printsec=frontpage&hl=en (Page 29)

Geoff, judging by the stats displayed under your match report, Harmes got nothing else from the umpires that day. Free kicks for: 0. Free kicks against: 6. On the other hand, the umps must have loved Billy Picken - 11 frees for and 1 against!
