Cora Lynn

The Cobras played most of their post-war football in the West Gippsland Football League, obtaining a senior flag in 1986. Overall, they might be adjudged somewhat unfortunate in that they lost no fewer than half a dozen grand finals.

After transferring to the Ellinbank and District Football League in 2005 the seniors showed steady improvement, finishing thirteenth of fourteen teams on debut, sixth in 2006, and fourth in 2007, before breaking through to claim an inaugural flag in 2008. After finishing the home and away season in second place with a 15-3 record the Cobras cruised to the premiership on the strength of resounding victories over Nar Nar Goon in the second semi final and Lang Lang in the grand final. With Cora Lynn’s reserves side claiming its second flag in three years it proved to be an exceptional season for the club all round.

In 2014 the EllDFL was split into east and west geographical divisions. Competing in the western division Cora Lynn claimed the premiership thanks to an 18.15 (123) to 6.9 (45) grand final defeat of Koo wee rup. The following season saw the league abandoning the experiment of geographical divisions and resuming as a single section competition. The Cobras enjoyed another fine year culminating in a second straight premiership claimed courtesy of a 21.11 (137) to 8.14 (62) grand final trouncing of Bunyip. In 2016 they made it a hat trick of flags when they accounted for Bunyip in the grand final once again. Scores were Cora Lynn 15.7 (97) to Bunyip 12.7 (79).

The 2017 season saw the Cobras embarking on a new phase in their existence when they were among 10 foundation member clubs of a new competition, the West Gippsland Football League. They went on to make the grand final but it was a day to forget as they slumped to defeat against Inverloch Kongwak by a massive 95 point margin. A year later they performed solidly to finish fourth before reaching another grand final in 2019. Opposed by Phillip Island, this was a much closer affair than in 2017, but the eventual result was the same, with the Cobras losing by a four point margin despite a three goals to one last quarter.
