Nar Nar Goon
Nar Nar Goon participated in organised competition from the first decade of the twentieth century, but authoritative records of the club’s achievements only date from the 1930s.
Between 1928 and 1931 The Goon amalgamated with the nearby Iona Football Club, with the merged team competing in the Central Gippsland Football League, as far as is known without success. In 1932 the merger was dissolved and both Iona and Nar Nar Goon affiliated with the West Gippsland Football Association (later League), a move which represented a definite coming of age on the part of the latter. After finishing fourth in their debut season The Goon carried all before them in both 1933 and 1934, defeating Pakenham in the grand final in both years. The 1936 season brought another grand final appearance but Garfield proved too strong. Twelve months later The Goon made amends by clinching their third WGFA flag with a grand final victory over Bunyip.
After the war Nar Nar Goon had to wait until 1959 to contest another grand final, losing to Longwarry. It was a similar story in 1961 when Pakenham triumphed, and 1964 when it was Garfield. The 1965 season saw The Goon turning the tables on Garfield to claim their fourth senior grade flag, with a fifth following five years later at the expense of Korumburra. The club’s last senior premiership WGFL was won in 1980 against Koo Wee Rup.
After joining the Ellinbank and District Football League in 2005 Nar Nar Goon’s seniors displayed slow but steady improvement, including finals appearances in both 2008 (third) and 2009 (fifth). In 2010 they qualified for their first ever EllDFL grand final and duly 'brought home the bacon' thanks to an 11.6 (72) to 9.10 (64) defeat of Cora Lynn.
Over the last half a dozen seasons Nar Nar Goon have invariably been competitive, qualifying for the finals in 2012, 2013, 2014 (western division), 2015 and 2016. The 2017 season saw them fronting up in a new competition, the West Gippsland Football League - not to be confused with the former competition of that name - in which their fine recent record was maintained as they once again made the finals, ultimately finishing fifth. This was followed by a fine 2018 campaign which The Goon make it as far as a losing preliminary final against Koo Wee Rup.
