Pioneers hold the rare distinction of having claimed five successive senior grade flags between 1980 and 1984. Since then they have added two more: in 2002 they downed Saints in the grand final by 21 points, while in 2011 they accounted for Centrals on grand final day by 59 points. More recently they have struggled somewhat, as evidenced by wooden spoons five seasons in succession between 2012 and 2016. The 2017 season brought partial recovery as they qualified for the top three in second place and went on to contest the grand final. However, opponents Saints proved too strong and won by 28 points. In 2018 there was a marginal decline as the side finished third.
