FITZROY'S SUPERIORITY

UNIVERSITY OVERWHELMED

Outside of Fitzroy members little interest centred in the game between Fitzroy and University, at Fitzroy. Depleted of such familiar figures as West, Kelly, Heron, Vines, and Neale, all of whom have volunteered for service with the Australian expeditionary force, University had some difficulty in getting a team. Farmer, Anderson, Morrissey, and Shelley were found to step into the breach. From the outset Fitzroy's superiority was evident. Their forwards, Heaney in particular, were kept busy compiling a big score, the visitors being beaten pointless in the first quarter. The second term was well advanced before success came to the students. The character of the play may be gauged by the fact that McLennan on one occasion was able to run from the half-back line and kick a goal. University showed one of their purple patches when Wood's kick-in was marked by Willis, and the ball was taken the full length of the ground by Heatley, Stafford, and Doig to Seelenmeyer, who secured a goal—an effort worthy of a less hopeless occasion. Though outmatched in the general play the students invariably turned their few scoring chances to profitable account. Meanwhile Fitzroy steadily built up their total, the board showing at the finish:—

FITZROY, 18 goals 18 behinds (126 points).
UNIVERSITY, 6 goals 2 behinds (38 points).

For Fitzroy, Norris, McLennan, Heaney, Holden, Lambert, Johnson, Cooper, Lenne, Freake, Shaw, Bamford, and Willoughby all gave a good account of themselves. Those to come most under notice in University's colours were Doubleday, Willis, Schraeder, Seelenmeyer, Morrissey, Hinman, Brake, and Farmer.

INCIDENTS

Hollow though their victory was, Fitzroy did not come out of their engagement with the University unscathed. While running up to goal in the third quarter Freake was accidentally rushed into the pickets and partially stunned, being unable to take any further part in the game owing to slight concussion of the brain. After the match it was ascertained that Lethbridge had injured the tendons of his right knee, and will in all probability not play again this season.
