Match Report

DULL AND UNINTERESTING

RICHMOND'S EASY VICTORY

There were few bright patches in the game at the Melbourne ground between Richmond and Melbourne. Almost from the beginning many men crowded on the ball, and in consequence the play was generally poor. The first half was fairly even, the goal-kicking being correct. The second half was considerably in favour of Richmond, and they ran up a large score. In the early part of the last quarter Reeves came into collision with Williamson, and got a nasty fall. As he came down his nose struck the ground, and it was badly lacerated. Richmond tried two new men in Maynard (Beverley) and Fraser (Richmond Juniors); while Melbourne took in Williamson in place of Allen.

1st Quarter

Richmond began with a rush to the east goal and the Melbourne backs defended splendidly. A dash to the other end enabled Best to score for Melbourne. Throughout the quarter the ball travelled up and down the ground, each side scoring in turn. At the first change Melbourne led by two points, the scored being—Melbourne, 3 goals 2 behinds; Richmond, 3 goals.

2nd Quarter

The second quarter was mostly played in the ruck, where Richmond were too strong for Melbourne, who, however, were holding their own about the centre. At half-time the scores were:—Richmond, 7 goals 7 behinds; Melbourne, 5 goals 4 behinds.

3rd Quarter

The second half needs little description, as Melbourne fell away, while Richmond were constantly attacking. At the last change Richmond's score was 12 goals 9 behinds, and Melbourne's 6 goals 9 behinds.

4th Quarter

In the last term Reeves, of Richmond, was off the field, and Bacquie was limping, having hurt his ankle. The final result was:—

RICHMOND, 15 goals, 15 behinds (105 points).
MELBOURNE, 8 goals 10 behinds (58 points).

For Richmond the most prominent players were Hughes, Mahoney, Reeves, James, Bettles, Keggin, Hall, Thomas, and Hede; while Melbourne were best represented by Lowell, McKenzie, Trahair, Monk, Hendrie, Lugton, Incigneri, Best, and Bacquie. Nordern's umpiring was first-class.

INCIDENTS

Although there was nothing in the game between Richmond and Melbourne Williamson, one of the Melbourne players, gave the umpire a deal of trouble. As a result he has been reported to the League for general roughness and elbowing. Two Richmond players, Hall and Reeves, sustained injuries during the game.
