Match Report

The league's newest (and most adventurous) franchise, Greater Western Sydney, was given the honour of starting the 2012 season with a Saturday night game against crosstown 'rival', Sydney. And despite a 10-goal thumping the new boys didn't disgrace themselves, doing enough to suggest they might even sneak a win or two in their debut season. Much of the focus was on rugby league convert Israel Folau who never got going but several of his young teammates, notably Tomas Bugg, Toby Greene and former Docker Rhys Palmer, shone out against their bigger and more experienced opponents.

Co-captain Callan Ward kicked the club's first goal in AFL football but, after a competitive first half, his Giants were steamrolled in the third quarter, managing a lone point against Sydney's 5.4. Kieren Jack, Josh Kennedy and Jude Bolton were strong in the midfield clinches and gave the Swans plenty of drive. In the end, the striplings wearing Giants guernseys were simply overpowered - as had been expected - but coach Kevin Sheedy was pleased with their spirit and the fact they outscored Sydney in the final quarter (owing largely, it has to be said, to the Swans' inaccuracy.) Compared to the 119-point hammering Gold Coast endured in their debut clash last year, it was a performance full of promise. The crowd figure of 38,203 was impressive enough but perhaps fell short of initial AFL expectations.

COACHES COMMENTS
Kevin Sheedy (GWS): The thing that we found out today is that this team has got a bit of spirit. We had three guys who couldn't come back on the ground because they were cramped and we may have luckily just outscored them in the last quarter, which was terrific.
John Longmire (Syd): I thought we were fumbling a little bit around the ball and we were giving away too many free kicks [in the first half]. I've been watching them over the past month and so it didn't surprise me at all [that GWS would be competitive]. We knew it was going to be a bit of a battle.

UMPIRES: Stevic, Meredith, Mollison
