Match Report

Although the Western Bulldogs went down by 49 points, there were plenty of positives to take out of the performance for new coach Brendan McCartney. The debut of Clay Smith was undoubtedly a highlight for the Bulldogs. The boom draftee kicked four goals, including a soccer goal while combating with one of the best defenders in the game, West Coast captain Darren Glass. The return to fitness of full-back Brian Lake would have made plenty of Bulldogs fans happy, although his bizarre attempt for Mark of the Year, that resulted in a goal to the Eagles, would have frustrated the coaching staff. With long-term injuries to Mark Nicoski and Mark LeCras, there were worries about where the goals would come from for the Eagles. But kicking 21 goals on the road should allay those fears for Eagles fans. Full-forward Josh Kennedy backed up his 10-goal performance against the Bulldogs in round nine, 2011 with another seven goals, including four in a blistering first quarter.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brendan McCartney (WB): We missed some opportunities [in the third quarter] and then in the next four or five minutes … our defensive work wasn't great. It wasn't [a lack of] effort; it was more a little bit of experience, a little bit of fundamentals and a little bit of just technical know-how, which we can work on as a group.

John Worsfold (WC): We know we still need to get better as a team to become a team that everyone thinks is one of the flag favourites. No one has really put us in that bracket yet; they think we might be in the top five or six, but we've got to show people that we're improving again.
