Match Report

It wasn’t a great spectacle, but Fremantle notched up their second win of the season by defeating Brisbane at home by 29 points. The Lions weren’t blown away, but they were never really in the contest as they went in with a highly defensive game plan to combat Dockers coach Ross Lyon’s stifling tactics. A match total of 13 goals was the nett result of all that negativity. Nearly all of the pre-game talk surrounded the return of Lions assistant coach Mark Harvey to Paterson Stadium for the first time since his infamous axing as Fremantle coach late in 2011. Harvey was given a warm reception from the home crowd, but he never really crossed paths with the man who took his job. The less-than-attacking game resulted in the Lions recording the lowest inside 50 count (20) on record in an AFL game. Both sides suffered injuries to key players. Dockers young gun Nathan Fyfe injured his shoulder and could miss up to three months, while Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger pulled up sore with a calf/achilles complaint. With Leuenberger being substituted off in the second quarter, debutant ruckman Billy Longer was given the near impossible task of going up against Dockers star Aaron Sandilands and the Fremantle big man made the most of the opportunity to finish with an incredible 54 hit-outs.

COACHES COMMENTS
Ross Lyon (Fre): The missing link was the ability to put a nice finish on it inside forward 50. We just wasted opportunities, so our method going in has to get better, clearly … you just can't bludgeon it through the whole time.

Michael Voss (Bris): I thought we were trying to be too perfect in the way we tried to move the footy. We didn't give our forward line chances at all  … we wanted to control the footy a little bit too much and we took the pace massively off the game and didn’t want to put it on at different times.

Umpires: Dalgleish, Rosebury, Bannister
