Match Report

The AFL’s newest side, Greater Western Sydney, continued its steady improvement with a fighting effort against the Western Bulldogs. Playing for the inaugural Prime Minister’s Cup in Canberra, the Giants started in brilliant fashion, taking a 11-point lead into quarter time. Israel Folau was energetic early for GWS, taking several great grabs, before a heavy knock in the second quarter limited his influence for the remainder of the afternoon. Young Giants forward Jeremy Cameron again showed why he will be a star, kicking five goals to be GWS’ best player, while Tom Bugg was damaging in the midfield. The Bulldogs’ experience and class shone through after quarter time - booting eight goals in the second term - as they scrapped their way to a 42-point win. It was a low-quality contest, but Dogs stars Ryan Griffen (37 possessions) and Matthew Boyd (35) did their best to lift the standard. The victory lifted the Bulldogs to a 2-3 win-losss record after a highly disappointing opening three games of the season. The Giants will play a number of games in Canberra every year in an attempt to grow their supporter base in the nation’s capital.

COACHES COMMENTS
Kevin Sheedy (GWS): I never went crook at them, but we turned the ball over by kicking the ball away and handballing. We're just going to have to take that risk and come into the corridor. Eventually you have to test your skills in an AFL game by moving the ball to anywhere in the field without fear of failure.

Brendan McCartney (WB): Even when you've got a young team, their young players have a lot of talent. Physically they're not at the level yet, but they will be quite soon, but they know how to play the game. That's why a lot of them were taken so early in the draft.

Umpires: Fleer, Leppard, Grun
