Match Report

Although Adelaide was 4-1 coming into this match, they weren’t given much hope of beating Sydney. All of their wins had come against sides that wouldn’t be challenging for the top eight (Gold Coast, Western Bulldogs, Greater Western Sydney and Port Adelaide), while the Swans were fresh from a morale boosting victory over Hawthorn in Launceston. Although the Swans were heavily favoured to win, Adelaide came into the match with a strong recent record against the Swans. The win was the Crows’ 12th in the last 14 attempts against Sydney. The Crows stunned Sydney with a brilliant five-goal to one first quarter. The Swans fought back hard and took a one-point lead into the last quarter. In a tense final term, both sides had a number of chances to wrap up the four points; most notably Sydney speedster Lewis Jetta, who narrowly missed a goal with two minutes remaining that would have put the Swans a point in front. But the Crows hung on to inflict the Swans' first loss of 2012. Swans games record holder Adam Goodes was outstanding with five goals, but was subbed out of the game in the fourth quarter with a quad injury. After being basically injury free for his entire 14-year AFL career, he was expected to miss six to eight weeks.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Longmire(Syd): It was probably the first quarter. We didn't capitalise on our forward entries and didn't use the ball very well in that first quarter and the first 10 minutes of the last quarter. Ultimately we were seven points up and they came out and kicked the first four goals

Brenton Sanderson (Adel): It was a fantastic win, a lot of spirit from the team. We probably were beaten on the night in a lot of areas of the game but I guess the spirit, the will to win, the desire was something that the boys should be really proud of.

Umpires: Ryan, Meredith, McInerney
