Match Report

A premiership contender against the AFL’s newest team always threatened to be a one-sided match, but Greater Western Sydney took it up to Carlton for three quarters. The final result may look like a blowout, but the Giants were only 25 points behind at three-quarter time. However, having lost ruckman Dean Brogan and former Blue Setanta O’hAilpin to injury, the young Giants faded while Carlton piled on some easy goals. O’hAilpin injured his knee and faced the prospect of an entire season on the sidelines. The Blues may have rested Chris Judd and forward Jarrad Waite from this contest, but they seemed to be down in all areas early in the game. Despite behind 10 points down at the first change, the Giants led Carlton in disposals, contested possessions and marks, and had had six more clearances. A goal to Giants midfielder Tom Scully early in the second quarter levelled the scores and briefly sparked the possibility one of the biggest upsets in VFL/AFL history. But the Giants were unable sustain such intensity over four quarters.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brett Ratten (Carl): I thought our ball use didn't help us at all; it was pretty average. We gave the ball back in areas of the ground that we're not really happy about, and that allowed us to be scored against. In fairness to our players, the pressure on them [from the Giants] was good.

Kevin Sheedy (GWS): It was good that some of the younger players played really strong, tough, relentless play. That's something that we've been making sure is in their ingredients as they come through in their first year. That's the competitive spirit that, if you want to be at a top club, you've got to have as your base.

Umpires: Dalgleish, Stevic, Foot
