Match Report

Melbourne sunk to a new low after another morale sapping loss. The 66-point loss to the Hawks left the Demons winless after seven rounds. If that wasn’t bad enough, Melbourne found themselves on the bottom of the ladder – even below expansion teams Greater Western Sydney and Gold Coast. Mark Neeld’s side were competitive early and only found themselves three points down at quarter time. But the longer the night went, the further behind the Demons fell. The margin could have been far more embarrassing for the Demons if Hawthorn had kicked straighter at goal. The Hawks finished with 15.25, with Lance Franklin the main culprit, his 3.7 taking his tally to 9.22 over the past four weeks. The Demons' main problem was that they just couldn’t find the football. Hawthorn dominated in contested and uncontested possessions, reflected by the 424-259 overall disposal count. The Hawks' big win was soured after it was revealed forward Michael Osborne would be on the sidelines for a year with a knee injury following a incident late in the match.

COACHES COMMENTS
Mark Neeld (Melb): It was near even in the first quarter and it was even in the third. We split that and people ask me 'what about the uncontested possession?' Well I'm concerned by that but a little bit less. When you are coming in new and you are starting from scratch, you want to make sure the effort and contested possession is there so we took a little step backwards with that tonight I reckon.

Alastair Clarkson (Haw): We tended to go a little bit too wide inside our 50, but having said that we missed some sodas from dead in front. What can you do? It's frustrating, but the players aren't trying to miss them.

Umpires: Rosebury, Findlay, Bannister
