Match Report

Fremantle ground out a solid 40-point win in a largely forgettable contest against a struggling Port Adelaide side. Coach Ross Lyon’s defensive game plan looked to be fully taking hold as the Dockers shut Port out of the match, keeping them to seven goals. Fremantle's win took them to a 5-2 record, while Port slumped to 1-6; ahead only of Greater Western Sydney, Gold Coast and Melbourne on the ladder. Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich brought up his 500th career goal in the dying minutes. Meanwhile, ruckman Aaron Sandilands returned from a two-week injury absence to assert a massive influence on the contest with 43 hitouts. Although the Power weren’t disgraced, there pressure is surely mounting on coach Matthew Primus. The Adelaide Advertiser ran a series of articles after their disappointing loss to Richmond a week earlier demanding Primus to be sacked immediately. Port was well served by former Magpie John McCarthy (30 possessions) and defender Troy Chaplin.

COACHES COMMENTS
Ross Lyon (Frem): I thought a lot of areas we were fantastic - we dominated inside 50s (55-36), clearances (40-37) and first possession. The one frustration - and at times I felt a little bit animated - was our ability to convert our opportunities.

Matthew Primus (Port):
We're disappointed and it's been a while since we've had a win now, and that starts to grate on everybody. But we're in a professional environment and individually we've got to learn to be able to pick ourselves up and come ready to train and get better this week and look forward to North Melbourne on Saturday.

Umpires: Ritchie, Margetts, Dalgleish
