Match Report

Port Adelaide had been under intense pressure in the week’s leading up to this contest after a series of scathing attacks from the Adelaide Advertiser. There had been increasing calls to sack coach Matthew Primus after a disappointing loss to Richmond in round six. Port looked like losing their seventh straight match when they were 32 points down 13 minutes into the last quarter. But as North capitulated, the Power charged home to record an emotion charged victory. The Power didn’t lead for the entire afternoon until the 30th minute of the last quarter, after Daniel Stewart brought the small, but parochial home crowd to their feet. On the flipside, North were left to lament how exactly they lost the game. When the Kangaroos defeated Geelong in round three, many had them as certainties to make the final. Since then, they had won just one game against the struggling Gold Coast. Jay Schulz was the matchwinner for Port, kicking seven goals, including four in the final term. North was well served by Drew Petrie (five goals) and Andrew Swallow (28 possessions).

COACHES COMMENTS
Matthew Primus (Port): We were lucky to be involved in the game still at three quarter-time. North probably didn't capitalise on their chances, I think it was five to 18 inside-50s in the second quarter and they probably didn't get enough dominance there. The resilience to keep presenting for the contest and keep wanting to get better, I couldn't have questioned

Brad Scott (NM): We're five goals up in the last quarter, our attitude isn't that we want to win by 10, it's… were getting too comfortable and that's a disgrace. It's the most bewildering game I've been a part of. How you can have what seemed to be total control of the game and then be opened up like that over the last 10 minutes? It's really disappointing.

Umpires: Margetts, Fila, Jeffery
