Match Report

St Kilda claimed another big scalp to boost their chances of an eighth finals appearance in nine years. The Saints had the better of Sydney after quarter time after the Swans took a nine-point lead into the first change. The 28-point win was the ultimate gift to inspirational Saints midfielder Lenny Hayes, playing his 250th game. Hayes was terrific all evening with 27 possessions. St Kilda’s small forwards were again dominant with Stephen Milne (three goals), Ahmed Saad (two) and Terry Milera (one) causing havoc for the Swans’ defence. After starting the season with five straight wins, this was the Swans’ third loss in four games. The absence of star utility Adam Goodes and ruckman Shane Mumford seemed to be weighing down the Swans as they battled to find spark when it was needed early in the second half. St Kilda’s more attacking style under new coach Scott Watters is paying dividends – they again kicked over 100 points – something that was a rarity under Ross Lyon’s old regime.

COACHES COMMENTS
Scott Watters (StK): I thought we held our nerve pretty well in the first quarter. Sydney are a very good side and you don't beat good sides by winning every quarter; you've just got to stay in the game

John Longmire (Syd): We started well. We had eight shots to four at quarter-time. And then St Kilda really got going. They won the contested ball in the second and third quarter. We just started to fumble. It affected our ball use. We just went backwards in the second and third quarters.

Umpires: Rosebury, Stewart, Hay
