Match Report

Greater Western Sydney’s first home game at their new home ground, Skoda Stadium, was a surprisingly tight contest for the first half. The Giants had more scoring shots (11-9) but were extremely wasteful in front of goal. The competition’s newest team battled hard against second-placed Essendon, but there was only ever going to be one winner. The win took Essendon to an 8-1 record, their best start to a season since the year of their last Grand Final, 2001. Bombers coach James Hird went to head-to-head with his long-time mentor Kevin Sheedy, who was in charge of the Giants. Promising young Giants forward Jeremy Cameron kicked three goals after a few poor games, while the Bombers had a good spread of goalkickers. Alwyn Davey, Stewart Crameri and Tom Bellchambers all kicked three each for the Bombers. An aspect probably more disappointing than the result for the Giants was the crowd. The opening of the new stadium attracted a modest crowd of 11,887. (The ground's capacity is around 25,000.) Sheedy said after the game it would take a “generation” to build up Giants crowds to where they need to be.

COACHES COMMENTS
Kevin Sheedy (GWS): I thought that for a first half, if we had had some goal power and kicked accurately … we worked really hard to get back into the game. We fought for contested balls and we were pretty good. Obviously the score doesn’t show it that way because they kicked very, very straight. But our players in the end need to be better at goal scoring.

James Hird (Ess): I just think maybe we were a little bit surprised at how good they (GWS) were around the contest. We'd planned for them being good, but even planning for it, they were better than we thought they were around the contest. I wouldn't like to play them here in two years time.
