Match Report

Great expectations have been placed on Richmond numerous times since 2001 (the last time they played finals), but usually Tigers supporters have been disappointed. But after a classic win over St Kilda, the Tiger faithful had genuine reason to believe this would not be another false dawn. It was a drought breaking victory for Richmond for many reasons. Not since round four, 2003 had Richmond come away with the four points over St Kilda and they had never defeated the Saints at Etihad Stadium. Tigers forward Jack Riewoldt backed up his six goals against Hawthorn a week earlier with another eight to be the dominant player on the ground. The Saints battled manfully, as undersized utility Jason Blake was used as St Kilda’s main ruckman in the absence of Ben McEvoy and Rhys Stanley; going up against Tigers big man Ivan Maric. The contest could have gone either way, with the lead changing four times in the last quarter. This match was played in finals-like atmosphere and was truly one of the best games of the season to date.

COACHES COMMENTS
Scott Watters (StK): We respect them as a side. We think they're a very good side, we got what we expected from that point of view. Defensively we would have liked to probably force the game into stoppage more than we did.

Damien Hardwick (Rich): I think now our guys have got that steely resolve and the mental resilience to get the game back on our terms and deliver the result we're after. For our guys to overcome an experienced side and to get back in front … was a really good sign of a side that is improving, but still has a fair way to go in a number of areas
.

Umpires: Stevic, Hay, Meredith
