Match Report

On paper it might look like a comfortable win to Geelong over the AFL’s newest team, Greater Western Sydney, but for the first half it was far from that. The Giants stunned the reigning premiers to kick the first three goals of the game and were playing some terrific football, while the Cats looked lethargic. Maybe the Cats’ lack of energy had something to do with the news from the VFL game. Cats young gun Daniel Menzel was playing his first game after injuring his knee in the 2011 qualifying final, but he didn’t last the game, injuring his “good” knee and would miss another season. Scores were all tied at quarter and half-time and it looked possible that one of the greatest upsets of all-time could occur. But the Giants’ young bodies tired as the Cats powered on in the second half to run away with a 65-point win. Cats defender Harry Taylor was switched forward with remarkable success, kicking six goals in his 100th game. In 99 matches, Taylor had kicked just three goals. Giants key players Callan Ward and Tom Scully were influential, while other young players show huge promise.

COACHES COMMENTS Chris Scott (Gee): Our senior players played pretty well, I thought. Not too many of them were letting us down. We played Tom Gillies in defence and Harry Taylor as a forward, which was a little bit different. We were always confident that Harry could give us something as a forward if required, and I think today went some way to proving that.

Kevin Sheedy (GWS): I think it is the best half of footy we have played for this year. There is no doubt about that. I never heard a word. I thought we were playing in a morgue going out to talk to the team at half-time.

Umpires: Fleer, Leppard, McInerney
