Match Report

It was the win nobody saw coming. Winless Melbourne had endured a tumultuous and horrific start to the season. Off-field dramas combined with the team failing to win a game in the opening nine rounds and they sat on the bottom of the ladder, behind expansion teams Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney. But the Demons’ gritty six-point win over second-placed Essendon was one to savour. Their gutsy effort looked about to come to nothing when the Bombers led by 14 points early in the last quarter – a significant margin in the context of the game. But the Demons would not be denied as crucial goals to regular defender Colin Garland swung the match. Not even a miraculous goal from Essendon captain Jobe Watson late in the match was enough to inspire the Bombers. When the final siren went there was an incredible outpouring of emotion from everyone involved with Melbourne. In amazing scenes, coach Mark Neeld and players reacted as if they had won the Grand Final.

COACHES COMMENTS
James Hird (Ess): We didn't play well, we didn't convert our opportunities, we didn't win contested footy - the things that we think we're good at we didn't do well tonight. We let Melbourne, who hadn't won a game, get a sniff and if you're desperate for a win and you get a sniff then you lift a cog. All credit to the way they played.

Mark Neeld (Melb): There's a bit of relief there but I'm also a big fan of being on the reality bus. It's round 10 and we've won one game so... We felt tonight we stuck at it and stayed in the contest all night.

Umpires: McBurney, Jennings, Foot
