Match Report

It is rare for players in the modern game to even contemplate a torpedo kick, let alone when four points are hanging in the balance. But Brisbane forward James Polkinghorne won the game for his side when he unleashed an amazing torpedo from 65 metres with a minute to go. The incredible weekend of upsets continued when the 14th placed Lions won an extraordinary contest with top of the table West Coast. The Lions were brave all afternoon, but when the Eagles kicked away to a 21-point lead early in the final quarter, Brisbane looked to be headed for their seventh loss of the season. But eight goals in the last quarter – including three to substitute Josh Green – had the small, but vocal home ground roaring. It was the Lions’ first win over a top-eight side since they defeated Collingwood in round 10, 2010. Although the Eagles went down, they still maintained their position on top of the ladder.

COACHES COMMENTS
Michael Voss (Bris): To play against a top of the table side and get a win like that, I'm pretty proud of their persistence and belief in what we're trying to do. We rate enormously what West Coast have been able to do over the last couple of years and to walk away with a win is a big plus for our club.

John Worsfold (WC): It was a win that was up for grabs and we didn't get. In terms of consolidating your position, you do that over 22 rounds, you don't do it in one week.

Umpires: Nicholls, Armstrong, Ryan
