Match Report

Carlton slumped to its fourth loss in five rounds, going down to Geelong. Blues coach Brett Ratten said his side would make the top-four at the 2011 best and fairest count, but those hopes now seemed lost. Carlton would be battling for a top-eight position, as they sat ninth after round 11. Things wouldn’t get any easier in the coming weeks for Carlton, taking on second-placed West Coast in Perth in round 12 coming off a six-day break. The Blues had the upper hand for the majority of the night, but a third quarter surge from the Cats put them right back into contention. Young forward Steven Motlop stepped up for Geelong, kicking four goals, while triple-premiership players Joel Selwood and Jimmy Bartel played vital roles in the 12-point win. The reigning premiers went to a 7-4 record and kept their top-four hopes alive after a shaky start to the season. Kade Simpson was the best for the Blues, while small forward Eddie Betts kicked four important goals.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brett Ratten (Carl): I thought it was a really big step for our group going forward, a really positive performance. I thought we were a lot bolder with the football, we took the game on. It's a step in the right direction. It wasn't perfect, but there was a lot to like about it. To be honest, we're not looking at the end of the season. 'Are we in the eight? Are we out of the eight?' We're looking at each week

Chris Scott (Geel): We were confident that if the game went down to the wire that we'd still be running over the top of the ground. Admittedly, they had some chances late and they would feel they could've won the game.

Umpires: McBurney, Rosebury, Wenn
