Match Report

After the darkest day in Gold Coast’s brief history, the Suns almost notched up their first win of the season. The club had been heavily criticised all week after a season of largely uncompetitive performances and being shown up by Greater Western Sydney in their first season. Despite kicking more goals than the Kangaroos, the Suns failed to record their first win at their home ground. There was an increased effort from the Suns, but it was just a lack of confidence and polish throughout the game from some of their younger stars. Gold Coast's skipper was simply outstanding (four goals, 42 possessions) and kicked a contender for Goal of the Year in the second term, with a brilliant finish from 50m out on the boundary line off his opposite foot. North Melbourne had also endured a number of tough weeks, with the sudden resignation of their CEO, combined with some underwhelming performances on the field. Kangaroos coach Brad Scott would have been relieved to go back to Melbourne with the four points, as it wasn’t anywhere near a performance that would have given the team a lot of confidence.

COACHES COMMENTS
Guy McKenna (GC): It was really encouraging. I think the boys now understand what is expected. The pleasing thing was we won some footy, we moved itforward and we came up seven points short. We tidy up some areas now that we've got the effort there and compete like that and you'll give yourselves a better chance of winning a game of footy.

Brad Scott (NM): They actually executed in front of goal a lot better than we did tonight. That second quarter was really indicative of that: 20 inside 50s and ... I think we had the ball in our possession 75 per cent of the quarter. That's fair control but the execution wasn't there to put them away.

Umpires: Meredith, Wenn, Jennings
