Match Report

The Brisbane Lions were coming off a morale boosting win over West Coast in round 10, and it showed in the first quarter as they took a seven-point lead into the first change. But it was all Hawthorn after quarter time, as the Hawks kicked 15 goals to five. The final margin could have been far greater than 65 points if the Hawks had converted better in front of goal. The Hawks had an incredible 25 more scoring shots to completely dominate the struggling Lions. Coach Alastair Clarkson must have got Hawthorn fired up at quarter time because they came out after the break with a manic and ferocious attack on the contest, something that had been severely lacking early on. Former Port Adelaide premiership star Shaun Burgoyne played his best game for the Hawks and mature aged recruit Dayne Zorko was the Lions’ dominant player. The win left the Hawks well on target for a top-four finish at the end of the home and away season, while the Lions were left languishing in 15th position with a 4-7 record.

COACHES COMMENTS
Alastair Clarkson (Haw): If we're going to be a great side at the end of the year then we need to make sure that we do it against some of the more seasoned campaigners. With no disrespect to the Kangaroos, Brisbane or Port Adelaide, there wasn't a scribe in the land that had them as seriously challenging for the flag. So we've done really well the last three weeks, we've been pleased with our intent, but it's yet to be proven that we can do it against the very good sides.

Michael Voss (Bris): I certainly don't think we took a step backwards. I don't feel I could question a guy's effort and attitude and want to take it up to the opposition because there were some ripping physical contests against a good side and we rate them very highly.

Umpires: Schmitt, Armstrong, Pannell
