Match Report

The Western Bulldogs powered to victory in memory of a club legend. The Dogs’ only premiership captain, Charlie Sutton, was farewelled during an emotional service only two days before the game. There was no way the Dogs could have possibly lost this contest as they evoked the spirit of Sutton. It was the Dogs fifth win of the season and they jumped up from 15th to 13th on the ladder with the vital victory. Tory Dickson continued to surprise up forward for the Bulldogs, kicking four out of the side’s 13 goals. Two of the Western Bulldogs’ most senior players, Robert Murphy (who spoke at Sutton’s funeral) and Matthew Boyd, played crucial roles in the win. Port Adelaide were in striking distance for the majority of the game, but they could never get close enough to seriously challenge. Port coach Matthew Primus was extremely disappointed in the post-match after his side had been more than competitive during the past month, which included an easy win over finals contender, Carlton.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brendan McCartney (WB): Two weeks ago, the game got away from really early on us because of how we set up and what happened 20 or 30 metres away from where the ball was. So (we were) much better (in that area) and it set the scene for the day

Matthew Primus (Port): Full credit to the Bulldogs - they came out and really went hard at the contest and we were really pretty second-rate in that regard. All game we were lucky to stay within striking distance because of their inaccuracy, but they certainly gave us a lesson in some hardness at the footy.

Umpires: Nicholls, Findlay, Mollison
