Match Report

Sydney gave their fans a contest to remember in a rare appearance on the big stage of Friday night football. A reduced capacity (due to grandstand renovations) crowd of 27,400 saw the Swans clinch the four points in the dying moments after surrendering a 35-point quarter time lead. Former Western Bulldog Andrejs Everitt proved to be the hero for the Swans after replacing dual Brownlow medalist Adam Goodes, who was subbed off in the final term. The Swans were two points down when Everitt marked 50m out with less than two minutes remaining and calmly slotted the winning goal. It was the second consecutive game Sydney had almost lost after Essendon got within two points of reeling in a record three-quarter time deficit in round 11. Geelong remained in seventh position on the ladder and questions were asked post-game about the Cats’ ability to win back-to-back premierships, and fourth in six years. AFL legend Leigh Matthews and Carlton premiership player Mark Maclure said the Cats would still make the finals in 2012 but would struggle to be involved in the last Saturday in September.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Longmire (Syd): Winning the close games makes a massive difference. The bottom line is you have to be in front when the final siren goes. That's the most important statistic of all. For the players to be able to do that and kick some important goals in the last quarter was terrific.

Chris Scott (Geel): We fought our way back which is a positive, but in the end we're really disappointed we didn't win the game. When you are in front with not long to go then yes, you would like to think that you would win the game. We were good enough at the end, we weren't good enough at the start.

Umpires: Donlon, Margetts, McInerney
