Match Report

The Brisbane Lions paid tribute to their past by defeating a disappointing Western Bulldogs outfit. It was a huge build up for the Lions, with extra motivation to honour club greats at the first Lions Hall of Fame Function later that night. Wearing an old Maroon Fitzroy strip, the Lions smashed the Dogs with slick ball use and frenetic pressure. Tom Rockliff further confirmed his status as a new star of competition, amassing 40 possessions and slotting two key goals in the third quarter. Brisbane moved past the Bulldogs on the ladder with the 58-point victory – their first win in Melbourne against the Dogs since 2003. The Bulldogs’ forward line had been heavily criticised all season in the absence of the retired Barry Hall, and it was basically non-functional against the Lions. Brownlow medalist Adam Cooney continued to struggle – looking a shadow of his former self – finishing the game with just seven disposals. Both sides ended round 13 with a 5-7 record.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brendan McCartney (WB): We're not going to hide behind this performance. We move on [and] hopefully play a bit more maturely and a bit more mature brand of footy next week.

Michael Voss (Bris): It's an emerging group but it's about being able to share that workload until a point in time when they become individually brilliant in their own rights. We had to play in a manner that [the club] was proud of, but … the guys also wanted to work towards being respected in the competition.

Umpires: Wenn, Jeffery, Mitchell
